Hay Saver Fibre Pellets
Stretch hay and forage supplies further when feed is short
When hay and forage supplies tighten, the challenge isn't simply finding another feed — it's working out how to make the feeds you have available go further while continuing to meet the needs of your stock.
Counterpoint Stockfeeds Hay Saver Fibre Pellet and Hay Saver Fibre Pellet Plus are fibre-based pellets designed to help extend limited hay and forage supplies in cattle and sheep feeding programs.
They can be used as part of a balanced ration during drought, dry seasonal conditions, feed gaps, low hay inventories or other periods where forage supply is under pressure.
Rather than simply selling you a pellet, our Nutrition Team can help work out how Hay Saver fits alongside the hay, silage, pasture, grain and other feeds you already have available.
Two Hay Saver options
Hay Saver Fibre Pellet
Hay Saver Fibre Pellet is designed for situations where forage quantity is the main limitation.
It is a fibre-based pellet using fibrous feed ingredients and can replace part of the purchased or conserved forage component of a properly balanced ration.
Best suited to:
-
Drought and dry-season feeding
-
Low hay inventories
-
Feed gaps
-
Extending conserved hay or forage over more animals
-
Making existing hay supplies last longer
-
Cattle or sheep feeding programs where additional fibre sources are required
The key idea: if you've got enough protein in the overall feeding program but simply don't have enough forage, Hay Saver Fibre Pellet may be the more appropriate starting point.
Hay Saver Fibre Pellet Plus
Fibre extension with additional protein support.
Sometimes the problem isn't only how much forage is available — the available forage may also be low in nutritional value.
Hay Saver Fibre Pellet Plus provides the fibre-extending role of Hay Saver with additional protein support for situations where both forage quantity and forage quality are under pressure.
Best suited to:
-
Lower-protein hay and forage
-
Drought feeding programs
-
Mature or weather-damaged forage
-
Higher-demand cattle or sheep
-
Rations requiring both fibre extension and additional protein
-
Situations where available forage has declined in quality as well as quantity
The key idea: where you're short of hay and the forage you do have isn't supplying enough protein, talk to us about Hay Saver Fibre Pellet Plus.
Which Hay Saver should I use?
A simple starting point is:
-
Short on forage → Hay Saver Fibre Pellet
-
Short on forage + short on protein → Hay Saver Fibre Pellet Plus
The right choice still depends on the rest of the ration.
Hay quality, pasture availability, grain feeding, livestock class, bodyweight, production targets and intended feeding rate can all change which product is the better fit.
That is why we recommend talking to the Counterpoint Stockfeeds Nutrition Team before setting up a feeding program.
Designed for cattle and sheep
Hay Saver can be incorporated into feeding programs for a range of ruminant enterprises, including:
-
Beef cattle
-
Dairy cattle
-
Growing cattle
-
Ewes and lambs
-
Merino and crossbred sheep
-
Backgrounding and feedlot programs
-
Drought and containment feeding systems
The objective isn't necessarily to replace hay altogether.
Instead, Hay Saver gives producers another tool to reduce reliance on scarce or expensive forage and extend available supplies across more stock or more days.
What if hay becomes extremely limited?
This is where ration planning becomes particularly important.
As forage supplies decline, simply replacing kilograms of hay with kilograms of another feed doesn't necessarily produce the same ration. Different feeds supply different amounts of fibre, energy, protein and minerals, and livestock still require an appropriately balanced diet.
Our team can look at what you currently have available — including:
hay + silage + pasture + grain + by-products + Hay Saver
—and help develop a practical feeding plan around your stock and feed inventory.
